A Conversation With Dave Coresh

modrNation: Where are you originally from?
Dave Coresh: I was born in DC but I grew up in Chicago.

modrNation: When did you move to Chicago?
Dave Coresh: I was like twelve.

modrNation: How did growing up between DC and Chicago push you into making music?

Dave Coresh: In DC I got influenced by a lot of live music but in Chicago I was influenced by battle rap, and the transformation of those two things coming together influenced what I do today.

modrNation: What was one of your craziest memories growing up?

Dave Coresh: One time me and the homies were throwing eggs out of a truck, we used to go  by this one park and we’d drive down the street throwing eggs out the window. One time it was raining and we spiraled out through the trees into the park and it stopped right before we almost hit a tree.

modrNation: Who have been some of your biggest influences in music?

Dave Coresh: Common is one of my favorite rappers, but besides that it was just go go and battle rap. Lupe Fiasco too, Kanye West, really that whole Chicago scene.

modrNation: What’s your favorite Kanye album?

Dave Coresh: Probably Graduation, I went to the Glow In The Dark Tour and that shit was crazy.

modrNation: You recently dropped your single TALK2ME, what was the inspiration behind that track?

Dave Coresh: I was just a self reflection track, just talking to the voice in my head or any type of resistance. None of this shti matters, the only thing that matters is that we can have a true conversation. So really all I’m saying is talk to me, but shut up when you talk to me with all of that doubt and disconnect, just keep it real.

modrNation: Is there anything you want to say about some of the tracks you have coming for the future?

Dave Coresh: Be very afraid, shits gonna be fun. My next single is called Boys Don’t Cry, and it’s just about not giving a fuck and going with your gut.

modrNation: How would you compare some of the newer music to the stuff you’d dropped earlier?

Dave Coresh: It’s in the same lane, I think I’m just turning the corner of a sound that I’ve created myself. I spent a lot of time developing what I have and now I feel that it’s finally developed.

modrNation: Take me through your creative process.

Dave Coresh: Have a workout, eat something healthy, be in the right space, good vibes, and I’m just gonna say the first thing that comes to my mind. Recently I’ve been in a space of honest vulnerability and finding what truly moves me. For a while I was trying to find what’s moving to other people instead of embodying how I truly feel and use art as expression. I tap into that space, press record and I just say what’s on my mind.

modrNation: What’s the intention behind your music?

Dave Coresh: I just want to express myself, that’s my main goal. The intention behind the music though is just to feel, that’s the most tangible part of this art form. You can’t touch it or eat it or smell it, the only thing you can do with music is listen and feel it internally.

modrNation: What would you say is the importance of finding your own identity and individuality as an artist in a time where making music is so popular?

Dave Coresh: I feel like I’ve been trying to knock down these barriers for ten years. I did my first project with a band in 2011, and I think now is a better time for it. People are opening up and are ready for something new, I spent my first years making music in a box because I was comfortable there but now I listen to all types of music and am gonna portray that with my sound. These other cultures, rock, indie, hiphop, etc. are engulfing, so I want to express all of those and now I feel free and want to express how I enjoy music.

modrNation: Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Dave Coresh: No Fun LA, the collective I’m in are really in the game. Mainly, just like what I said in the beginning, I’m gonna be expressing myself for a living. I’m a simple guy, I want to go on a stage and yell my music at people and have them yell it back at me.
