Joony Is Taking The Music Game By Storm
Maryland is having a strong year in the music scene with the emergence of many artists in 2022. Coming out of Silver Springs, Joony is the latest on the list of rising artists from Maryland. Gaining recognition from fellow Maryland artist Brent Faiyaz, Joony is establishing himself as one of the best up and coming artists. The 21-year-old artist began making music when he was just about 13, before then he was skating and aspired to becoming a voice actor. Recording his first rap on an iPhone, an older friend of his heard the potential and encouraged him to get into a studio. From then he would consistently record and improve on his sound. With his background in skating, he listened to a lot of alternative rock growing up along with the hip hop his dad would listen to. Influences coming from all over he has said Kanye to be his biggest inspiration. “The first song I remember hearing as a child, just ever, was Gold Digger” he said in an interview with Our Generation Music. After releasing his first project in 2019, he has kept his foot on the gas constantly releasing music and evolving his sound. Now in 2022 he put a stamp on his sound with the release of his latest album Pretty In Black.
Refreshing is just one word to describe the feeling of this body of work. In a generation where a lot of music lacks originality, Joony is setting himself apart from other artists in that he is creating what is real and unique to himself. In the current state of music, a lot of artists compromise making music about their real life’s but rather make what they think is popular at the time. Joony is bringing a different approach to his music by not only speaking on his real-life events but also innovating in the perspective he gives. Pretty In Black is a cohesive project that’s sonically driven by laid-back production, a perfect recipe for his ambient vocals. Going through his experiences with women is a constant theme throughout the album along with him experimenting with drugs. Only eleven songs long with a running time of twenty-four minutes, it’s great music for any occasion where background music is needed, it’s not too deep for the average listener nor is it party driven but somewhere in the middle.
Though there are a lot of highlights on the album, a couple that stand out are HIGH LOWS, BE OTW, DRUGS AND FASHION, & DRIFTING IN TOKYO. HIGH LOWS being a collaboration with producer Cashmoneyap, shows his potential of becoming a star with his ability to sing and make melodies with his voice. Joony gives his own take on the genre of afro-beat with the song BE OTW, collaborating with singer Lily Rayne he demonstrates the chemistry he builds with another artist in order to create a sound that works for both. DRUGS AND FASHION is the song that captures Joony’s sound and the versatility he can bring into his music, a Travis Scott sound with influences from 808’s and Heartbreaks Kanye. He takes a completely different approach with DRIFTING IN TOKYO, fusing alternative rock with vintage 80’s styled drums he creates a vibe that sounds like no other. Paving his own lane, he is making noise with his music and is here to stay for a while. Building on the sound that is reminiscent of Landstrip Chip, Joony is on top of his game and will continue to push the ball forward in hip hop.
