When There Was No Sun - [Wakai]

Jagged, eerie, narrow, and challenging… those are just a few ways to capture Wakai’s introspective track “When There Was No Sun.”

As the title track states, the song is a recollection of life in the dark. Abstract metaphors cover the whole of the track as Wakai intertwines discussions about insecurity and resilience when reality is shrouded by darkness. Wakai states one “only bodybuild[s]” instead of “doing cardio… or “healing the sections underneath”, as a reflection upon the idea that building walls around one’s emotions instead of opening up is detrimental when dealing with one’s mental health. It’s a deeply philosophical theme that follows throughout the track.

Mick Jenkins appears as well and delivers with a cut-throat verse that differs heavily from Wakai’s off-kilter flow. As a whole Jenkins’ verse adds a much needed kick to the laid back track and, as always, it’s just a genuine pleasure to hear Mick Jenkins on a track.

Wakai’s new album To a Dark Boy releases March 25th, this Friday.
