My Favorite Color: The Underlying Humanity of a Musician

In this series, written by Connie Roses, we at modrNation will be taking a look at three Pittsburgh artists. While scenes such as L.A, Atlanta, and New York birth talented and unique artists, they are covered much more often than other cities. We hope to give you a better understanding of how the city of Pittsburgh forms artist’s beliefs, style, and motivations.

To start we have interviewed My Favorite Color (MFC), who we’ve talked with before. Originally from L.A, he moved to Pittsburgh around the age of 13. Once he signed a deal with Rostrum in late 2020, MFC moved back to L.A to focus on his music career. A great deal of his heart can be attributed to the balance of the west and east coast in his life. If you saw him in a crowd of people in Pittsburgh, it might be easy to tell that he’s not a regular ‘yinzer' from clothes alone. Baggy, colorful clothes mixed with his trademark gold tinted, larger than average glasses separate him from your usual Pittsburgher. But if you get to know him a little more, it’s easy to understand how the gray and cold city helped form his very down to earth, solemn understanding of life.

It’s always interesting to read about or talk with My Favorite Color because of this balance. It makes one remember that he’s not just a musician, but a human being. It’s something that can be easily forgotten in the age of the internet. Without further ado, My Favorite Color.

modrNation: How have you been doing as of lately?

I’m really airy. Kinda just going where the wind blows. Depressed one day, hopeful and motivated the next. We’re all just here until we aren’t, ya know? Got some cool music ‘bout to drop so that’s cool. Shoutout to Jessica Alba just because. I eat omelets with my hands if they aren’t too wet ‘cause it’s a lot more convenient. Think ‘Quesadilla’, but you lost the fork so you gotta do what you gotta do. It’s just like that. That’s how I’ve been doing.

modrNation: In your last interview with us, you touched on how you want to be acting in movies in a few years. It made me want to know: what are a few of your favorite movies and how have they affected your music?

I really like (it’s headass at this point, I know, but) Quentin Tarantino movies. Grew up adoring Kill Bill and Uma Thurman in general. Especially Pulp Fiction. Uma - shordie was pretty much Euphoria before Euphoria. Something about her made me not give a fuck about things and I love that. Fight club was really important. It gave me my snarky-charm. Turned me into this cliche - who cares ? - nothing’s even real - ass nigga that we know and love today. Gummo isn’t a favorite exactly but it was prominent because I love weird, uncomfortable shit. We’re all so afraid of being uncomfortable. I accept that shit with open arms because it’s inevitable. Superbad is one of those movies that turned my humor into what it is today. I’d watch it everyday if I had to. I even had it on Blu-ray when I was in the psych ward.  Something about him drawing those dicks really resonated with me. Iron giant is a 10/10 movie. I swear to god it is. Those movies and a million more just broadened my imagination and imagination combined with lyrics is always a cool mixture.

modrNation: If someone didn’t know who you were but saw you in public, they could easily tell that you love fashion and have an eclectic style. Have you ever thought about designing clothes or had any aspiration to dive further into the world of fashion?

Definitely, man. I just know if I did it, I’d wanna do it RIGHT. Less on the merch scale, and more on the BRAND scale. I haven’t just yet because once I dive into things, I really DIVE IN and stop talking to everyone n’shit. I don’t wanna be that antisocial and creative yet. But once I do, I can honestly say I’ll have a lot of NEW ideas that people will either love or hate, no in between. Kinda like my music. But who knows, I could be cappin’ about all of this and actually have a whole line about to drop in September and tour merch. Maybe a gap hoodie that says “MFC” instead of gap or something.

modrNation: Before this, I was actually reading through your article on Passion Of The Weiss . It was deeply intimate and gave several views upon who you are, and was overall just a great read. It showed that as a rising artist your life becomes much more public to those who aren’t close to you. What are your feelings when it comes to people’s perception of you as a musician? Not Willis, but My Favorite Color? Can it be hard to deal with?

It makes me the saddest and happiest I’ve ever been. Cause at the end of the day, this is what I wanted. This is what I worked for. I’m not just Willis anymore. My Favorite Color is a trademarked brand and I deserve everything I have and everything that’s coming. But it gets dark too.

When it comes to family and certain friends n’shit, I have family that says shit like “THE SUPERSTAR’S HERE!” Meanwhile I’m not shit yet. Barely even D-List. All that does is make random family members I don’t know well resent me because they think I think I’m SOMEONE or something, meanwhile all I want is to hang out and watch not another teen movie with my cousins like the old days. It’s crazy being a musician because it’s not even perception of me as a musician vs me as a person.

Being a musician legitimately takes the human out of you. Because you are what people view you as at the end of the day. People viewing me as a rapper makes me exactly that, a rapper. Nothing more and nothing less until I decide to widen my horizon and be viewed as “a rapper that also dabbles in this ‘n that.” People love rappers but nobody cares about rappers. I chose to be a zoo animal . It’s like… should I stay in the zoo or go back in the wild? The wild is a representation of the real world. The zoo is this fabricated-ass land of comfort that comes with being an artist. If I ever become famous, I can only be infamous. Never unfamous. It’s really funny when you think about it.

modrNation: Every once in a while as I’m scrolling through instagram I’ll see a video of yours pop up. It’s usually hilarious, and I get a good few laughs out of em. It’s easy to see that both in and out of music you’re a relatively humorous dude. Though many of your songs are emotional and have a large sense of depth to them, many of your songs are filled with that same humor. So I gotta know, what are some of your favorite one-liners/punchlines in rap? I’ll go first:

“Corruption, stuntin' at the function

Your girl pussy smell like Sour Cream & Onion” - Mac Miller, Bird Call

Pretty much every BabyTron and BFB song. Those dudes really know what they’re doing, I admire it. EVERY. LINE. IS. AN. IG. CAPTION.

modrNation: Obviously you’ve been working hard on your next album, can you share any themes or topics that you will be addressing on this release?

The usual. Depression, Sadness, Happiness, Annoying girls, Broke ass niggas who be hating on me, Love, Alcoholism, extremely underrated lyricism, extremely overrated lyricism, Fashion, toxic drug use but I wouldn’t call it a “problem” just yet, you know? Just my everyday life and what came with it when I wrote the songs.

modrNation: Lastly, especially since this is a Pittsburgh spotlight, what was your favorite venue to perform at in Pittsburgh? Would you like to shout any artists out as well? Thanks again for taking your time to answer my questions man.

Stage AE for sure. Cause like, WTF? I went there to see Thundercat before and somehow - someway - I ended up deserving to perform there too!? Craziness. There’s a ton of dope ones tho’. That one was just like a huge milestone for me. I don’t really fw American Eagle though, it gives “I’m white and had both parents. Fuck my life.” I don't really like America and eagles eat their babies. Weird shit, bro.

Shoutout Benji. And Fedd The God. Seeing how far they’ve come has been so fun. Keeps me believing. Benji and I went from performing at Pitt in 2018 to kicking it in Beverly Hills reminiscing about performing at Pitt in 2018.

Me and Fedd went from cops shutting the show down before our performances in West CabumFuck, PA to kicking it with Kyle Massey and Metta Worldpeace in Koreatown. Full circle.
