mynameisntjmack Releases Head-Turning Project “THE LORDS OF SOUNDS AND LESSER THINGS”
As hip-hop continues to grow and evolve it may seem as if it’s losing the original art form. That’s far from the case as artists like Griselda are still paying homage to the roots of hip-hop by not only using boom bap-style instrumentals but also focusing on their lyric content and dropping knowledge. Originating from Newport News, Virginia, mynameisntjmack is here to do the same and push the boundaries of rap music. Utilizing elements from the old school to the new school, he is bridging the two eras of hip-hop. Heavily influenced by Isaiah Rashad, mynameisntjmack’s flow is complementary to the smooth production. Taking a slightly different approach into each track he creates a puzzle and each song is its own unique piece telling an overall story throughout the album. He uses different flows and styles while changing the tone of his voice from raw and raspy to smooth and laid-back. He demonstrates his versatility but not in the way where he is trying to do too much or mimic other artists but staying within the boundaries of his sound. This is important in that being versatile is industry standard at this point but it’s just as important to realize what works for you and what doesn’t as an artist, you don’t have to try everything.
mynameisntjmack takes you through his personal life going in depth about his drug use and the feelings that come with it. A difficult subject to speak on in a generation where drugs may be more abused now than ever, most people shy away from talking about what drugs do for them and the effects it has on one’s emotions. mynameisntjmack takes this subject head on and addresses what he is dealing with. “A couple thousand fans, a couple friends I’m still alone…a symptom of these xans” he raps on the song Newbrassknuckles. Speaking about feeling alone even though reaching success and having fans, he still deals with unanswered emotions resulting from drug use. On the other hand he raps “I took.a perc and it made me feel good” on the song Tucker, and you can see here his confliction where on one side it makes him feel down and the other side makes him feel good. Something to be conscious about and how drugs affect your emotions. Taking a different approach on songs Themoonlandingwasfake and Selfaware/2020 he touches on being aware of himself and his growth thus far. mynameisntjmack does something similar to Kendrick Lamar with his use of skits, on the songs Grand Large, Yes Indeed, and Lesser Things. While these are more skits than songs they still add to the overall story of the album, giving off the impression of a mother giving guidance throughout one’s life.
“These are my struggles with stability, identity, and desire. This is how forces of nature, and self, translate into my reality” mynameisntjmack said via. Instagram. This is the theme of the album and it can be felt with each song. If you like artists such as Flatbush Zombies, Earl Sweatshirt, and Denzel Curry, mynameisntjmack is a mix of all these in one and you are sure to like him as well.
